If you happen to leave fruits or berries around, it will eventually rot. It can also happen with reeds and other vegetative items if there was rainy day. You will be alerted of an item rotting, by a message when waking up. If left alone, it will produce some kind of worm.
It can be used as fertilizer on shrubberies, blue spines bushes or small trees with fruits for them to regrow faster.
